Water main breaks in Mamaroneck

An underground water main broke at the height of Friday's rush hour. The main broke on Mamaroneck and Halstead Avenues in Mamaroneck Village. Traffic backed up all the way to Interstate 95 and the Hutchinson River Parkway.

The water has been shut off and Westchester Joint Waterworks says only a handful of businesses are without water. One hydrant is not working, but they say that won't be a factor in case of a fire emergency. They say the big concern is what happened beneath the road surface. Officials are worried the water damage may make the road collapse. Crews are on the scene trying to determine the condition of the road.

Meanwhile the closure of the busy intersection is hurting area businesses. On a Friday night, Enzo's Restaurant is usually packed for dinner but reservations were cancelled and people did not show up do to the break.

Westchester Joint Waterworks worked through the night and found the break in a ten-inch main.
