New Yonkers GOP leader was arrested for drug possession nine years ago
(09/27/03) YONKERS - Zehy Jereis, a long-time political ally of State Senator Nick Spano, was elected as the new Yonkers Republican leader last Wednesday. Now, there is news that he was arrested and charged with helping to arrange the sale of marijuana nine years ago.
Jereis was arrested nine years ago by an undercover Westchester County police officer and charged with first-degree criminal sale of marijuana. He eventually pleaded guilty to a lesser charge, but some say this newly released information has placed a cloud over Jereis' appointment. Some people say it was already clouded by his previous conviction in 1998 for election violations.
Phillipe Gille, the spokesperson for the Yonkers Republican party, told News 12 Westchester that Zehy Jereis has no intention of stepping down from his new post as Yonkers GOP leader. News 12 Westchester also tried to contact State Senator Nick Spano for his reaction to the latest news about Jereis, but no one from his office replied.
