White Plains man killed in apartment fire
(09/28/03) WHITE PLAINS - An early morning fire Sunday in White Plains turned deadly, killing one man and injuring another person.
The fire broke out just after 4 a.m. with smoke pouring out a window on the fifth floor. Most of the residents managed to get out safely, but firefighters found one man inside his living room. Valentin Ramirez, 43, was taken to White Plains Hospital where he was pronounced dead. An autopsy conducted Sunday determined the cause of death as smoke inhalation.
Another resident fell while evacuating and is in good condition. A third person from the apartment was not injured.
The damage from the fire was apparently contained to the fifth floor apartment at 59 Old Mamaroneck Road. Residents evacuated from the building were allowed to return back home.
Fire officials are continuing their investigation into what caused the fire. Some neighbors said they heard it was because of someone smoking in bed, while others said it was an electrical problem. Officials have all but ruled out smoking in bed as the cause. They believe they will have a definite cause by Monday afternoon.
