Yonkers woman hit by garbage truck recovering after losing part of her leg

A Yonkers woman remains hospitalized after being hit by a garbage truck.

On Saturday morning, 70-year-old Pelagia Villanueva was struck by a garbage truck on South Broadway near Undercliff Street. According to Yonkers officials, Villanueva was hit while the truck was backing up. One of Villanueva's legs was crushed so badly that part of it had to be amputated.

Hugo Flores, the victim's son, says he is praying for his mother's recovery. He says that his mother is a woman who is full of life.

Yonkers police are still investigating the accident. The driver, Jermain Oliver who works for WRI Carting, has not been charged.

Villanueva is in stable condition at Jacobi Medical Center in the Bronx.
