First Hindu Temple in county opens in Yonkers
(10/12/03) YONKERS - On Sunday, a Hindu Temple opened its doors to a crowd of 2,000 worshippers. The new "BAPS" Hindu Temple is located on Yonkers Avenue near Midland Avenue, just south of the Cross County Parkway.
The new temple is called the Swaminarayan Hindu Madir. It is run by a Hindu Sect, known as BAPS. For decades, the roughly 5,000 Hindus living in Westchester had to travel elsewhere to practice their faith. Now, they have a place within the county to call their own.
Most of the work in the temple was done by volunteers. This is the 36th temple of its kind in the United States. For more information on the new Hindu Temple in Yonkers, click here.
