Conjoined twins in WC to be separated weeks after similar surgery in TX
(10/12/03) VALHALLA - Seventeen-month-old Clarence and Carl Aguirre, twins joined at the head, are being prepped for surgery at Blythedale Children's Hospital in Valhalla. Doctors there have to make sure the twins are strong enough before the delicate procedure can be done.
Doctors will then transfer them to Montefiore Hospital in the Bronx for the actual surgery, which will take place in phases. Their operation is scheduled for later this month. So far, doctors say things are looking good for the twins, but they will need months of therapy after the surgery to help them recover and learn to function separately.
Another set of conjoined twins recently made news in Texas. After 26 hours of surgery this past weekend, Egyptian twin boys also joined at the head, are now separated. Two-year-old Mohammed and Ahmed Ibrahim were born with two brains but one fused skull and a shared maze of blood vessels.
