Phil Amicone will succeed John Spencer as Yonkers mayor

Republican Deputy Mayor Phil Amicone has defeated Democrat Joe Farmer in the Yonkers mayoral race.

Amicone pledges to continue the redevelopment and renewal of Yonkers. He also praised Mayor John Spencer, calling him "the greatest mayor this city has ever had." Earlier this year, Amicone defeated State Assemblyman Michael Spano in the G.O.P primary. Spano was listed on the ballot for mayor, but stopped his campaign a month ago and endorsed Amicone.

Democrat Joe L. Farmer, a former schools superintendent, was hoping to become Yonkers' first black mayor. Farmer's campaign received a boost from former President Clinton who left phone messages for thousands of voters.
