Shrub Oak holds parade to honor veterans
For some, Veterans Day is a day about family and for others it's a civics lesson. But Sunday's Veterans Day Parade in Shrub Oak was a way for everyone to pay respect to veterans who fought for America's freedom and those who are fighting for it now. Dozens came to the parade which stressed the American military values of honor, service and commitment.Denise McDermott of Yorktown said she brought her children to the parade to show how much veterans have done for the country. She said she she told her children how important it is to stand up and show respect by marching. The parade also called attention to differences between now and when the Vietnam War was going on. Sgt. Jerry Hillis of Yorktown Heights said now more than ever, he believes people realize the importance of veterans to the country. During the Vietnam War, some Americans looked down upon veterans as there was a strong anti-war movement in the country.
