Local veterans in Somers unveil memorial honoring U.S. foot soldiers

(11/16/03) SOMERS - A new monument was unveiled Sunday in Somers to honor exclusively those U.S. soldiers who served as infantrymen. Veterans and county officials unveiled the monument five days after Veterans Day at the Lasdon Park Arboretum and Veterans Memorial.

The four-foot high gray marker specifically honors foot soldiers, in particular those who served at least 30 days of sustained battle on the front lines.

Many infantry vets at the ceremony say are pleased with the unique honor. Local veterans raised the money for the monument; they have been working on this project for years.
