Pregnant woman, unborn child, killed after being hit by car in Yonkers
A pregnant woman was struck and killed in Yonkers Wednesday afternoon. Compounding the tragedy, the woman's unborn child did not survive. The accident happened on Riverdale Avenue.
Brigida Flores, 33, owned a pizzeria on Riverdale Avenue. Police say she went across the street to deliver a pizza when she was struck and killed by a car.
Flores was six months pregnant with her fourth child. She was pronounced dead at the scene, but she was rushed to St. Joseph's Medical Center where efforts were made to try to save the baby, but those efforts were unsuccessful.
People in the neighborhood tell News 12 Westchester that this section of Riverdale Avenue can be treacherous and there have been other accidents in the past.
Yonkers police say 17-year-old Alexon Montalvo, also of Yonkers, was the driver of the car that hit Flores. Police say the accident is still under investigation. No charges have been filed against Montalvo but they are looking into whether drugs or alcohol played a factor.
Flores leaves behind three children ages 13, 8 and 1.
