Yonkers school board votes to suspend cuts and layoffs
The Yonkers school board held a quick meeting Friday and decided to suspended the cuts and layoffs until December 5.
Originally, the Yonkers school board voted to cut all extra-curricular activities, music and art programs, and 502 workers by December 1. A few days later, Mayor John Spencer (R-Yonkers) stepped in and announced that all cuts and layoffs were on hold while lawmakers worked on coming up with the $20 million needed to fill the district's budget gap.
The board's decision Friday now gives city and state leaders more time to figure out where to find the money to save the school district from this crisis.
