State H.S. football finals in Syracuse: New Rochelle wins, Rye falls a bit short
(11/29/03) SYRACUSE, NY - The New York State high school football finals were played in the Carrier Dome in Syracuse on Saturday. Two teams from Westchester were looking for their first-ever state titles.
The New Rochelle Huguenots beat the two-time defending Class-AA champion Webster Schroeder Warriors 32-6. It is the first New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) football championship for New Rochelle. The Huguenots gained 384 yards on the ground and 397 in the game. Webster had 115 yards passing and 132 total yards. The Warriors were one of the top 20 high school teams in the nation this season.
Earlier in the afternoon, the Rye Garnets played the Chenango Forks Blue Devils for the Class-B crown. The Garnets turned the ball over three times, and they lost 16-0. The Rye football team will have to wait until next year to try and capture their first state title. Tim Batty threw for one touchdown, ran for another, and kicked a 36-yard field goal to lead Chenango Forks to victory.
