Fire destroys house in Bedford; initial searches indicate no one was home
(11/29/03) BEDFORD - A fire destroyed a home in Bedford on Saturday evening. Firefighters from several communities helped battle the blaze, but the fire still caused serious damage to a house on Stonehill Road near Millertown Road in Bedford.
Several people living in the area made calls to the fire department, but fire officials say the home had no chance against the ravenous flames. The blaze had already fully engulfed the home by the time firefighters got to the scene.
Members of the fire departments from Bedford and from six other Westchester towns responded to the blaze. More than a dozen trucks and 75 firefighters from many Westchester fire departments came to the home, which is in the middle of the woods. It was a total external attack for the firefighters. They could not make it to the main body of the house because there was so much fire.
Bedford Fire Chief Andrew Klein said firefighters did not know late Saturday night whether or not anyone was home at the time of the fire. They did not find anyone inside in their initial searches. Fire officials are currently investigating the cause of the blaze.
