Westchester Medical Center nurses outraged over possible job cuts

The nurses say they are already short staffed at the medical center and that cuts would affect patients' needs.

On Thursday, nurses and more than 2,000 medical center workers learned that the center has plans to layoff 220 employees before Christmas. According to a spokesperson for the medical center, there is a need to reduce millions of dollars in salaries and benefits in order to fill the medical center's $35 million deficit.

The unions representing both the nurses and other hospital workers blame the crisis on fiscal mismanagement.

Workers are also upset because they have not been told which jobs are specifically targeted. They are expected to learn what jobs will be cut over the next two weeks. Officials have informed employees they will receive 30 days notice prior to termination.
