Firefighters battle five-alarm blaze in Mt. Vernon during blizzard conditions

(12/06/03) MOUNT VERNON - A five-alarm fire started Saturday afternoon at a building that was half residential and half retail. The building is located on the corner of West First Street and North 10th Avenue in Mount Vernon.

Fire officials say the it was tough for the dozens of firefighters to fight the fire because of the blizzard conditions of strong winds and snow. Crews from Pelham and New Rochelle came to the area to help put out the fire.

Ten families were left homeless from the blaze, but no one was injured. The Red Cross is currently helping these families get temporary housing.

Firefighters say the blaze was under control by Saturday evening, but fire officials still need to investigate the cause of the fire.
