Yonkers mother charged with killing her 2-year-old daughter

A 2-year-old Yonkers girl has died after her mother reportedly beat her. Police say on Tuesday, 20-year-old Uniqua Smith of Yonkers beat her daughter, Theresa, to death after the little girl wet her pants. According to police, Smith called a relative saying that she thought she hurt Theresa. Relatives then called police. Theresa was pronounced dead at St. Joseph's Medical Center in Yonkers about 10 a.m. According to Westchester County's deputy social service commissioner, the child was only returned to Smith's care in June after she finished rehab for a drug problem. A counselor had visited the home recently, but found no indication of abuse.

Smith has been charged with second-degree murder and is being held without bond. Smith's other child has been taken into protective custody.
