More than 100 workers at Westchester Medical Center get pink slips
Hospital workers spoke out Thursday about getting pink slips right before the holidays.
A total of 196 employees at Westchester Medical Center received lay off notices Wednesday. A small group of workers didn't even show up for work on Thursday because they were too devastated by the news. One worker who did go to work says he is shocked and hurt over receiving a pink slip. He says his position has been eliminated and is not sure how the medical center is going to fill that gap.
Officials at the medical center say they are faced with a $35 million budget gap, and by cutting the staff they will save $16.5 million in salaries and benefits.
The president of the union representing some 2,000 medical center employees says he blames the financial crisis on bad management and carelessness. The president feels employees will now become overworked.
Workers will remain on the payroll until January 10 before being officially terminated.
