Yonkers mother accused in fatal beating of daughter waives right to a hearing

A Westchester grand jury will hear the case against a 20-year-old Yonkers mother accused of beating her daughter to death. On Monday, Uniqua Smith waived her right to a felony hearing in court. Smith faces second-degree murder charges for allegedly beating her 2-year-old daughter Theresa to death last week after the little girl reportedly wet her pants. Officials say the child had been in foster care for six months before a judge ruled she could be returned to her mother in June. The circumstances of her return are now under review. Smith remains behind bars without bail at the county jail in Valhalla until a date for the trial is set.
