Police arrest mother of young girl who survived six-story fall in Yonkers

Police have arrested the mother of a 10-year-old girl who survived a six-story fall from her apartment building in Yonkers.

According to police, the girl got into an argument with her mother, 48-year-old Maryum Shabazz, removed the air conditioning chute cover and attempted to climb down six stories using bed sheets. Police say the girl fell and broke her ankle and leg. Yonkers police later discovered rotten food, roaches, an inoperable shower and toilet and human feces in the apartment.

Police arrested Shabazz on the misdemeanor charge of endangering the welfare of a child. Child Protective Services were notified about the apartment. Shabazz has three other children living there. The girl is recovering at Jacobi Medical Center in the Bronx.
