Yonkers police, immigration agents crack down on illegal alien gang members
Yonkers police and federal immigration agents announced the results of a sweep of illegal alien gang members that netted five men in Westchester Thursday.
The Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency has been working with the Yonkers Police Department on an initiative that targets dangerous criminal gang members for arrest, prosecution, and removal from the United States when applicable. Officials say many gang members are illegal immigrants on probation who commit violent crimes.
The three-day sweep netted arrested of 33 suspected gang members in the metropolitan area, five of which were from Yonkers. The initiative by ICE is part of a larger effort by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the New York City Probation Department. Officials say all the agencies are working together to eradicate street crime.
