Huge contract for Kawasaki brings hundreds of new jobs to Yonkers

A $499 million contract for Kawasaki will bring hundreds of new jobs to Yonkers.

The Port Authority announced Friday it awarded the Japan-based corporation the deal to build 340 new PATH trains at the Kawasaki Rail Car plant in Yonkers. The new cars will carry mass transit commuters from New Jersey to Manhattan. Officials say in order to complete the job in three years the Yonkers plant will more than double its workforce, adding 300 jobs to its current staff of 250 employees.

Yonkers officials say the contract is not only a boost for the workforce in Yonkers but to the local economy as well. The new PATH train cars are part of an overall modernization program to replace the oldest cars in the mass transit fleet.
