Apartment fire leaves three Mount Vernon families homeless

An apartment fire left three families homeless in Mount Vernon Wednesday.

Four different fire departments were called in to battle the raging blaze at the three-story apartment on South Tenth Avenue. Fire officials say no injuries were reported but there was difficulty getting the flames under control. Firefighters say they had trouble getting to the apartment because of its close proximity to other houses.

Residents are waiting to find out if anything will be salvageable after the fire. The Red Cross is helping out the families left homeless. The cause of the blaze is under investigation.
