Scores of officers honored in White Plains during National Police Week

It's National Police Week in Westchester, a time when the county honors those who have gone above and beyond the call of duty. Scores of police officers were honored for their acts of bravery at a special awards ceremony Thursday. Two of the officers honored, Nicholas Mastrogiorgio and Dennis Smith of Mount Vernon, responded to a burglary call last July. They chased down a suspect who pulled a gun on them and tackled him without firing a shot. Later they learned the suspect was wanted for serial rapes in the same neighborhood he was caught. A roll call of the names of police officers who died in the line of duty in Westchester was read aloud to remind everyone of the officers who made the ultimate sacrifice.
