Residents pack Rye Playland despite safety issues after fatal accident last year

Many residents packed Playland Park in Rye this weekend, despite safety concerns after a fatal accident last year.

An investigative report by an outside consultant cited several safety issues last fall. The report called for the retraining of all ride operators and more supervision. It also called for clearer signs about height and weight requirements for riders. Park Manager Joseph Montalto says all of the suggestions to improve safety have been taken.

In May 2004, 7-year-old Stephanie Dieudonne, of New Rochelle, was tossed out of one of the rides and killed. Her death was ruled an accident by the county, but an outside consultant was brought in to review park safety.
