Junior firefighter saves life in Briarcliff Manor

An Ossining High School student is being called a hero after saving an elderly man from a burning house Wednesday.

Jeffrey Bassett, 16, one of five members of his family on the Briarcliff Fire Department, was on his way to school when he spotted the fire around 8:30 a.m. He says he called 911, but realized the call went to a Rockland County control center. A neighbor then called 911, and fire units came to the scene.

Bassett says he didn?t wait for firefighters to respond to the house onApple Lane. He says he went towards the garage and found 70-year-old Peter Tierney inside and carried him to safety.

Tierney is being kept under observation at Westchester Medical Center with second degree burns.
