Mount Vernon mom who lost son in Iraq fights for American Gold Star membership

The mother of Corporal Bernard Gooden is getting some high profile help in Mount Vernon. Carmen Palmer?s son Bernard died in Iraq back in 2003. Now she is looking to be recognized as an American Gold Star member. Palmer, a Jamaican National, has been refused membership because she is not a U.S. citizen. Mount Vernon Mayor Ernie Davis is joining Palmer in her fight to have the organization?s bylaws changed. They are hoping all mothers who lost a son or daughter in the military, regardless of their citizenship, be eligible for membership. This weekend, a Yonkers woman who lost her son in Afghanistan dropped her fight to be recognized as an American Gold Star member.
