Many Westchester residents joining fight to help local mothers get national honor

Many Westchester residents are joining the fight to help two local mothers get a national honor.

During the second annual ?Thank You For Serving? Rally in Somers Sunday, attendees were urged to sign a petition. It calls for the American Gold Star Mothers to change its bylaws so non-citizens can join the national group.

The Yonkers woman and Mount Vernon woman both lost their sons in Afghanistan and Iraq. The two were denied membership to the American Gold Star Mothers because they are not U.S. citizens.

In order to change the bylaws of the American Gold Star Mothers Constitution, its members must take a vote and publish a notice of the proposal one month before their national convention. However, this year?s convention is in a few weeks so any new amendment will have to be made next year.
