Peekskill police say suspect in high-speed chase is well known to them

Peekskill police say the suspect that led them on a high-speed chase Thursday that ended in a crash on Bear Mountain Parkway is no stranger to them.

Peekskill police say they received a call from a Yorktown woman who said her former boyfriend stole her car. Police pursued the stolen vehicle to the Bear Mountain Parkway in Cortlandt but backed off when the pursuit became dangerous. The suspect, 22-year-old Arnold Fernandez, crashed the car and was airlifted to Westchester Medical Center. Fernandez remains in the hospital with serious head injuries.

According to authorities, Fernandez was involved in a standoff with police in March of 2004 when they tried to arrest him on drug charges. Fernandez faces numerous traffic violations as well as charges for car theft.
