Angelo Petrone resigns as Yonkers School superintendent

Yonkers School Superintendent Angelo Petrone has resigned effective Wednesday at the request of Mayor Phil Amicone.

Petrone has been at the center of a controversy and now a criminal investigation involving questionable hiring practices in the district. A probe by the Yonkers inspector general determined that it was connections rather than experience that got an accountant hired with the district. The accountant was a close friend of Petrone?s daughter. The report also determined civil service laws were violated in the process.

Petrone and five of his aides were subpoenaed by the Westchester district attorney last week to appear before a grand jury in connection to the hiring scandal. Amicone said Petrone?s dismissal has nothing to do with the grand jury investigation. Related storyYonkers school superintendent, aides subpoenaed by district attorney's office
