Westchester doctors give Pine Bush toddler a ?miracle ear?

Doctors at Northern Westchester Hospital performed a cochlear implant procedure on an identical twin from Pine Bush in hopes the toddler may soon hear for the first time.

Julia and Ava Gersick of Pine Bush are identical twins except for one point. Julia was born with the ability hear and Ava was not. At the age of three months, doctors diagnosed Ava with nerve damage that would prevent her from ever being able to hear. Last month surgeons at Northern Westchester Hospital performed surgery on Ava and gave her cochlear implant, the first step in the hope the toddler will hear.

Doctors say the next step is to attach a transmitter that will help translate the electrical impulses from the cochlear implant to sound. Ava?s parents can?t wait to see the reaction of their 20 month-old daughter to sound for the first time.
