Yonkers School superintendent, five aides to testify before grand jury

Yonkers School Superintendent Angelo Petrone and five other school district leaders are scheduled to testify before a grand jury Wednesday.

On Tuesday, Yonkers Mayor Phil Amicone called for Petrone?s resignation, which is effective as of Wednesday. Amicone partly blamed the dismissal on the media attention surrounding a hiring controversy, which began last fall. First, a report by the Yonkers inspector general determined an inexperienced accountant was hired because of his connections to Petrone. Now, a grand jury was convened to investigate the hiring practices of the Yonkers School Board.

Meanwhile, the Yonkers Board of Education is expected to meet Wednesday evening and name an acting superintendent.
