New Rochelle family sues Rye Playland for daughter?s death

A New Rochelle family is suing Rye Playland, the ride operators and Westchester County a year after their daughter died on the Mind Scrambler.

Last May, 7-year-old Stephanie Dieudonne was killed after she wiggled out from under a safety bar and was tossed out from the spinning force of the ride. The lawsuit alleges the ride should not have been enclosed or operated in the dark. It also says the ride operators were not properly trained.

The police investigated the incident and found no culpability on the part of the county, which owns Playland. Park officials maintain the ride is safe and say they routinely check all the rides. However, several changes have been made to the Mind Scrambler, such as additional lights and seatbelts. The county is trying to get the lawsuit dismissed.
