Three-year-old starts fire that destroys Yonkers apartment building

Fire officials say a blaze that destroyed an apartment building in Yonkers Thursday was started by a 3-year-old playing with matches.

According to authorities, the fire broke out at around 4:30 p.m. on Pond Road. Fire officials say the blaze destroyed the three-story wooden apartment building quickly. All the residents got out of the fire alive with the help of rescuers.

On Friday, the more than 20 residents who are now homeless came back to the building to see what belongings they could salvage. Officials say the child who started the blaze will undergo counseling in a special program.
