Putnam Valley bishop looks to save historic Old Stone Church in Mohegan Lake

An Orthodox congregation in Putnam Valley may save a deserted church in Yorktown?s Mohegan Lake area. The historic Old Stone Church has been sitting unused along Route 6 since 1983. Archbishop Anthony Bondi feels his congregation could put the building to good use. He would like to restore the building with the help of the community. Nicholas Bianco is one of two Yorktown councilmen who proposed the town buy the property early this year. They suggested using it as either a museum or welcome center for the town. Bianco feels using the building as a church would achieve the same goal. There's no guarantee the bishop will buy the church. But if it qualifies for listing on the National Register of Historic Places, federal or state aid might help pay for restoration.
