Suspicious package on bus causes evacuation of area in Mount Vernon

A suspicious package left on a bus in Mount Vernon caused an evacuation of the bus and surrounding area Monday.

According to authorities, a Liberty Lines bus driver discovered a nylon bag near the back of his bus after a passenger alerted him about the object. The police were called and the 20 passengers were evacuated at Prospect Street. Officials also evacuated people within a two-block radius.

The package turned out to be a hand steamer. However, in light of last week?s bombings in London, authorities wanted to be careful. Mount Vernon police want to know if it was left behind by accident or if the person wanted people to think it was a bomb.
