Suspect who attacked a trooper in Cortlandt had three warrants for his arrest
Police say the suspect who attacked a state trooper after a prolonged chase had three warrants out for his arrest.
According to authorities, 22-year-old Jeremy Smiton led state police on a dangerous chase along Route 9 after stealing a car in Croton. Police say Smiton finally abandoned his vehicle and tried to get away on foot. State Trooper Kevin Gonzalez caught up with the suspect and a struggle ensued. During the struggle, Smiton grabbed Gonzalez?s gun and a round discharged to the ground. No one was hurt until Smiton choked and bit the trooper, threatening to kill him.
Smiton was finally apprehended hours later at the Camp Smith Army Base. Smiton was arraigned on charges of assault and criminal possession of stolen property. Prosecutors are looking to add additional charges.
