Local lawmaker kicks off campaign to crack down on released sex offenders

A local lawmaker kicked off his campaign Sunday to crack down on sex offenders released from prison.

Assemblyman Lou Mosiello (R-Yonkers) feels dangerous sex offenders should be hospitalized in mental health facilities after their release from prison. His push for a crack down on sex offenders comes after a murder at the Galleria Mall parking lot. A level 3 sex offender, Phillip Grant, is accused in the stabbing death of a White Plains mother.

Mosiello believes if Grant was required to stay in a shelter or facility, the White Plains woman would be alive. He is pushing for legislation to pass a civil confinement bill. Mosiello hopes to get enough signatures for a petition in favor of civil confinement.

The civil confinement bill will be the subject of a hearing Tuesday at Concordia College, sponsored by state Senator Jeff Klein.
