Suspect in Cortlandt manhunt faces felony charge after misdemeanors dropped

The Somers man arrested after a manhunt in Cortlandt was back in court Monday.

Two misdemeanor charges against 22-year-old Jeremy Smiton were dropped. However, he still faces a felony charge for assaulting a police officer. Some state troopers say their investigation is not over and additional charges could still be filed.

State troopers say Smiton led them on a chase up Route 9 by car, through a neighborhood on foot and finally through the National Guard?s Camp Smith. Police say Smiton was trying to hide because state troopers wanted to arrest him for stealing a car in Croton Friday.

Smiton is being held without bail at the Westchester County Jail. He is due back in court on August 8. In addition to the charges pending against him, Smiton is being held on several outstanding warrants.
