Forum in Yonkers on creating work center for day laborers gets heated

A forum in Yonkers on creating a work center for day laborers became heated Friday.

Day laborers usually do low-paying landscaping, construction, or food service jobs. Instead of loitering around public places looking for work, they want a job center where they can gather instead. Many spoke of the need for such sites and about protecting the workers and giving them safe working conditions.

A Mount Vernon man could no longer hold back his anger and shouted about enforcing the immigration laws. He also said a work center would be in violation of federal law. The man got so worked up, he was asked to leave the forum.
