Parks and recreation committee probes deadly accident at Rye Playland

The County Board of Legislators Committee on Parks and Recreation begins its probe Tuesday of last week's tragic death of a boy at Rye Playland.

Officials say 7-year-old Jon-Kely Cassara, of Connecticut, was killed on Ye Old Mill ride from blunt head trauma. The boy was found lodged under the conveyor belt inside the boat ride. Playland officials say they will now install signs and distribute flyers warning parents about placing young children on dark rides. The park has a total of four such rides; a 7-year-old New Rochelle girl was killed on one of them last year.

Department of Public Safety officials will report on the progress of its investigation into the accident at Tuesday?s committee meeting. The State Department of Labor is expected to issue its final report on the ride sometime next week.

The funeral for Jon-Kely Cassara will be held Tuesday night in Darien, Connecticut.
