Rabies alert in Northern Westchester and Putnam County

Residents in both Westchester and Putnam counties have been getting vaccinated after several rabies scares.

A Croton Falls woman received a vaccination after her dog got into a fight with a rabid raccoon. Her dog had been already vaccinated against rabies, but since the dog licked her face, health officials were concerned she may have come in contact with the raccoon?s saliva.

Two dozen residents in Putnam County are also being vaccinated after recent run-ins with bats. While only a small percentage of bats ever test positive for rabies, Putnam officials ordered shots because the bats were not saved for testing.
