School Street shootout occurs after Yonkers mayor announces violence crackdown

Just days after Yonkers Mayor Phil Amicone announced a crackdown on violence, a shootout on School Street Sunday left a 26-year-old man seriously injured.

Detectives say several shots rang out on School Street and the victim was hit on his right side. The unidentified 26-year-old man was taken to St. Joseph?s Medical Center. Police say this shooting is the 13th violent incident of its kind in southwest Yonkers this summer.

Amicone, along with Yonkers Police Commissioner Robert Taggart, say the crackdown is on what appears to be gang-related revenge attacks. Taggart has promised more patrols, more detectives and more arrests.

Anyone with information on any of the recent crimes should contact Yonkers detectives at 377-7725.
