Lack of oxygen to blame for fish die-off in Mohegan Lake

The county health department says a lack of oxygen is to blame for the recent spate of dead fish in Mohegan Lake.

Residents discovered dead fish in and around the lake last week. Environmental officials say the hot weather helped produce an overabundance of algae. When that algae decays, it robs the water of oxygen and suffocates the fish.

Biologists say the phenomenon is not uncommon in lakes. Residents are being told the lake is safe for swimming and boating despite the dead fish.
