Dozens evacuated in Port Chester after water main rupture

Dozens of people and businesses were evacuated from Main Street in Port Chester after a water main ruptured Tuesday afternoon.

Officials say an independent contractor accidentally broke through a 16-inch water main, causing gallons of water to pour out into the street. Emergency and water crews say they had to dig out the ground to get closer to the damage. Power and water had to be cut off and traffic was re-routed.

Officials say it was difficult to fix the problem because the water main and the road are both old.
