Soaring gas prices produce proposals to save Westchester residents money

Politics are taking center stage as the growing crisis concerning the price of gas continues in Westchester.

Rob Astorino, Republican challenger for Westchester County executive, is proposing an immediate 30-day suspension on the county-portion of the gas tax. Astorino says there already is a big surplus in sales tax collections partly because of the rising gas prices. He adds, the cut in county sales tax would offer some relief.

Westchester County Executive Andy Spano says he is looking further down the road by asking the state to cap the county and the state sales tax on gasoline. Spano also says the county is going after stations with higher than average prices. The Department of Consumer Affairs will go out and subpoena records of gas stations to ward against price gouging.
