K-9 police unit helps take cocaine off Westchester streets

A state police K-9 unit helped to take nearly $1 million of cocaine off the streets during a routine traffic stop on Interstate 95 near Rye Thursday.

Bernie, who is part of the K9 unit, was called in after a driver began to act suspiciously during a routine traffic stop. Police say Bernie sniffed out 18 bricks of cocaine hidden in a suitcase. Rafael Ortiz and Teofilo Santiago, both of Massachusetts, were quickly arrested. Both now face felony drug charges and 25 years to life in prison.

The two suspects are being held at the Westchester County Jail without bail.
