Athletes show off their skills at annual wheelchair games in White Plains

The Burke Rehabilitation Hospital in White Plains hosted its annual wheelchair games on the facilities grounds.

Experts say wheelchair sports are known for their therapeutic benefits because they build strength and self-confidence. Alyssa Andolino, 13, of New Jersey, is one athlete who performed in the shot-put event. When Andolino was 7 years old, she suffered a stroke and lost all feeling in her legs. Her mother says she will never be able to walk again, but just seeing her active is a miracle in itself.

About 80 athletes participated in this year's wheelchair games, ranging in age from 5 to 74.
