Legislators approve $57 million bailout for Westchester Medical Center
Westchester County legislators haveapproved a $57 million bailout for the financially ailing Westchester Medical Center.
The money, which comes from refinanced bonds sold in 1999 against the county's share of a national settlement with tobacco companies, will will be given out in payments of about $4 million a month. The county executive and county legislative board chairman must sign off on each monthly check. In addition, the hospital will have to supply the county with monthly financial statements and an account of how the money will be spent.
Budget Committee Chairman Michael Kaplowitz says the countymoney would keep the hospital running for now, giving the state Legislature more time to act.
