Democratic candidate calls for immediate closure of Indian Point

The Indian Point Nuclear Power Plant is becoming an issue in the race for Rockland County executive, with the Democratic candidate calling for an immediate closure of the plant.

Democratic candidate Ellen Jaffee, along with some other local officials, say the plant lacks an effective evacuation plan in the case of an emergency. Jaffee cited recent siren malfunctions, the radioactive water leak and FEMA's mishandling of Hurricane Katrina as valid reasons to close the plant. She blasted Rockland County Executive Scott Vanderhoef for lacking a proper evacuation plan.

Vanderhoef answered back by saying that leaders create safety plans and make suggestions. He added that Jaffee is playing on people's fears in order to get votes.
