Man charged in murder of ex-girlfriend in Yonkers hostage standoff

The man who held his ex-girlfriend hostage for two hours before fatally shooting her was charged with second-degree murder Saturday.

Police say 53-year-old Frank Rizzo, of New Rochelle, took 49-year-old Carmella LaPuma hostage at her Yonkers home at approximately 7:30 p.m. Friday. Police say Rizzo tied up LaPuma and put a gun to her head. LaPuma was able to call her daughter who then contacted police. Negotiators spent nearly two hours on the phone with Rizzo trying to get him to release his former girlfriend.

During the course of the negotiations police officers heard two shots fired. Police rushed the home and after taking Rizzo into custody, discovered LaPuma?s body. Rizzo is due back in court on October 11.
